Safe On Campus
Call 387-2123 or email lbgt-coordinator@wmich.edu for registration information.
This 2 hour educational program describes the basics about being an ally to lesbian, bisexual, gay, and transgender (LBGT) students. Participants receive a handbook detailing practical strategies for addressing homophobia; learn ways to support students who are “coming out”; and gain an understanding of respectful language use. Participants may choose to become members of the Safe On Campus (SOC) program by signing a pledge of support for LBGT people. SOC members are given a door sign and button to display in their campus living or work place. This indicates the space is safe for LBGT persons to discuss their concerns. Periodic emails provide updates about community programs and newsworthy events. SOC facilitators may be invited to residence halls, student organizations, and classrooms. Membership is always optional.
NEW Changes to the Safe On Campus Training Program!
We have decided to alter the Safe On Campus training program this semester. As you will note, the Safe on Campus Trainings are now divided into Level I, Level II, and Level III.
The Level I Safe on Campus Training provides a general overview, educating
individuals about gender identity and sexual orientation. This training is intended for those who have little experience with individuals of varying orientations and identities. A brief introduction to terminology and basic information on being an ally will accompany a SpeakOUT! panel.
The Level II Safe on Campus Training is more advanced and will further familiarize participants with the concepts of gender identity and sexual orientation. This training is designed to provide additional information to individuals that already have experience with such topics, but are interested in further educating themselves. We will talk more about the “T” in LBGT, LBGT Identity Development, and more. This training would also be a good refresher course for past SOC members.
The Level III Safe on Campus Training is an advanced seminar that is designed to provide information on pertinent and contemporary discussions in the LBGT Community. This year, the Level III training will focus on the current debate regarding the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and the exclusion of trans individuals from that legislation.

Gender Identity Training Program
The creation of the Gender Identity Training Program (GITP) began by the LBGT Coordinator in 2007 after the inclusion of “gender identity” in the WMU non-discrimination policy. The goals of the program are to provide a comprehensive educational module to members of the university and surrounding communities about gender identity and expression. The GITP is available to the WMU community, including student organizations.
SpeakOUT! Panel Presentations
Call 387-2123 or email lbgt-coordinator@wmich.edu to request a panel.
SpeakOUT! is a panel discussion program designed to increase awareness about people of different sexual orientations and gender identities through peer contact and conversation with audience members. Panelists are lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender (LBGT) or heterosexual ally students who are trained to speak in a panel format about what it is like to be a member of the LBGT community or an ally to LBGT people.
Panelists share their experiences coming out as LBGT or allies and engage audiences in question-and-answer style discussion about their lives. SpeakOUT! panels are requested by a variety of classes, residence halls, and student organizations every semester. Panelists meet regularly to foster a community of support, friendship, and continuing education. Training for new panelists is held each fall and spring semester. WMU grad students, staff, and faculty are also welcome!
Student Leadership Team
The Office of LBGT Student Services Student Leadership Team is comprised of 15 student leaders on campus. The purpose of the team is to promote inclusiveness and awareness on campus regarding issues of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. SLT members are selected from a group of applicants based on their past and current leadership positions and campus involvement. Our monthly, three-hour meetings consist of educational presentations and team-building exercises. The SLT is responsible for promoting an inclusive campus environment through peer education programs and collaboration with various student groups.
Please contact Sarah at lbgt-coordinator@wmich.edu if you are interested in joining the LBGT Student Services Student Leadership Team.
